What is the Difference Between House Coal Doubles and Trebles?

What is the Difference Between House Coal Doubles and Trebles?

When it comes to premium house coal, there are a number of choices that need to be made in order to produce the best result possible. Not all coal will produce the same results. Therefore, it is important to equip yourself with the necessary information regarding the difference between house coal doubles, house coal trebles and other alternatives.

Do All House Coals Produce the Same Result?

It may come as somewhat of a surprise to learn that different coals can produce hugely different results. However, something that generally can be said to bring them together is the high levels of heat and unique, aesthetically captivating flames that they produce. Premium house coal continues to be popular despite the rise of smokeless alternatives. Part of the reason for this popularity is due to the excellent levels of heat and uniquely captivating, high rising flames it is able to produce.

All traditional coals are formed over a sophisticated 300 million year process called coalification. This process can be summed up as the chemical transformation from vegetation into coal. In more scientific terms, coal becomes coal through the transformation of the complex biological and molecular structures in plant cells into the chemical structures and fragments of coal.

Whilst the quality of coal will not diminish between doubles and trebles, their effects and usage will somewhat differ due to the differences in size. Taking into account the likes of “smokeless” coal as well, the following can all vary massively depending on which specific type of fuel you choose to purchase:

  • Duration of time the coal burns for

  • The amount and type of smoke which is produced (e.g. how much carbon dioxide is emitted into the environment)

  • The lighting effect produced by the flame

  • The amount of heat which is produced during burning

  • Whether ash is produced and how much of this by-product is left over

What Impact Does Size Have on Coal?

The origin of the fuel is not the only factor which you need to consider. The second influence on the effect of your coal is its size. Whilst size will of course not affect the quality of the fuel, it will determine how it burns as well as lighting. High-quality fuel is available at Dawson’s Fuel in two major sizes: doubles and trebles.

Our Colombian Doubles come with the following attributes:

  • Approximately 20-55mm in size, meaning that they are generally easier to light and therefore easier to get the fire started

  • They generally burn faster than trebles, meaning that you will need to refuel your fire more frequently

  • Produce a 5-star quality heat output

  • Are not smokeless

  • Are not HETA approved

  • Have very low ash levels (2%)

Our Colombian Trebles come with the following attributes:

  • Approximately 50-90mm in size, meaning that they usually take longer to get the fire started in the first place

  • Burn for longer than singles due to the larger size

  • Once established they will also give off a 5-star quality high heat output and burn with an alluring, distinct, long flame

  • Do not need to be refuelled as often as doubles

  • Are not smokeless

  • Are not HETA approved

  • Have very low ash levels (2%)

So to conclude, the major differences between singles and doubles lie in the amount of time they burn for, as well as how long it typically takes to get them going. This, of course, makes trebles house coal a more price-efficient option than doubles, as you won’t need to refuel your fire quite as often. However, doubles come with the benefit of being more convenient and easy to light.

Essentially, the decision between different size house coal lies not in quality but in your uses for either. They both produce a great quality flame with very strong heat output and have extremely low ash levels

Does it Matter Where the Coal Comes From?

Quality is a major factor that can be affected by the origin of the coal. Whilst Britain used to play a huge part in fuel production, the majority of our coal is now imported from overseas. The likes of Russia, Poland and Colombia are all major players in the 21st century coal production industry.

However, the coal experts at Dawson’s Fuel truly believe that the best premium house coal comes from Colombia. We define our idea of “quality” coal through a number of factors. We believe that the major benefits of Colombian coal lie in the fact that it is able to deliver consistently high heat output, a quality looking flame and very low levels of ash to go with this.

Despite the decline in the UK mining industry, there is still British coal available on the market. This product will generally come at a cheaper price and is thus classified as an “economy” house fuel. However, our British House Coal Doubles are still of great quality.

What Alternatives Are Available?

Ultimately, house coal continues to be hugely popular in amidst the growing market of “smokeless” alternatives. The high levels of heat and unique flames it is able to produce is a major reason for this. However, in light of increasing environmental concerns regarding carbon-dioxide emissions, household owners, business and organisations are opting for a “smokeless”, more planet-friendly alternative.

The best option on the market for smokeless alternatives is currently Homefire Ovals. This product is a smokeless fuel briquette which has been developed for use on both multi-fuel stoves and open fires. Not only are they environmentally safe, but they also have a longer burn duration than traditional house coal. Also, these homefire solutions do not degrade or weather like other ovoid types, meaning you get less slack within the bags of “hard” ovoids.
